10 Minutes to Save My World

April 23, 2010

“It’s like we live in this awesome treehouse” Mr. K

That pretty much sums it up. I really really love our apartment, Mr. K really really loves our apartment. We really really love our apartment! It’s amazing how much can change in 10 minutes. 10 minutes is the time it took us to get from our old apartment to our new apartment. That 10 minutes has given me a new outlook on life and Jersey City. I’m sure Mr. K is happy that my drunken screaming other half has disappeared, in fact she is probably stuck waiting for the bus at the end of our old street.

I never realized how much of an impact my neighborhood had on my mood and my life in general. I was miserable living at the old place. My misery seemed to seep into the lives of others, especially Mr. K. I’m sure it was no picnic being around me for those six months, I barely wanted to be around me. I started to see how much the whole situation was affecting him, when towards the end, he would start to complain right along with me, doubling the misery.  I knew I affected other people to a certain extent, but never really saw the total destruction I could bring to all those around me, and then all those around them. If I talk trash to all of my friends then in turn they can start talking trash to all their friends creating this terrible chaotic reaction. If I talk calm, loving warmth, then it can create a brilliant, shimmering world around me, and others.  I think I had forgotten that the power of one is so strong and can touch so many. I was too busy being stuck in the black hole that was my old apartment, completely focused on myself and my misery to see the shift that was taking place in my relationships because of it.

Needless to say the trashperson has come and cleaned up my being, so now there is space for the new and the lovely to come on in!

Water

April 2, 2010

I never realized how relaxing water can be until I moved into an apartment that overlooks it. After a particularly anxious day I came home worked out and decided to catch some early springtime rays out on the patio. As I stared out into the water and the Statue of Liberty I was instantly relaxed. The calm movements of the water calmed my nerves. It was beautiful and peaceful. I think we are gong to like it here!

Goodbye Bus!

Today was my last ride on the bus! We had a love hate relationship the bus and I. it took me about four months to figure her out. Its wasn’t easy but once I got the timing right, we had a decent relationship with minimal abuse. But none the less I’m A little too excited to say bye bye bus, I hope to never see you again.

Ps. Thanks for not making me wait for you in the pouring rain this morning. We ended things on a good note!

Moving on Up!

March 14, 2010

That’s right! Mr. K and I are moving on up – literally! We are leaving our third floor walk up in ghetto suburbia for a penthouse apartment in the sky! Our new neighbors will be lady Liberty and the Exchange Place path station! Goodbye horrendous cab lines, hello 5 minute walk home!

Today we signed our lease and made it official, for the next 15 months we will be living on the NJ waterfront. However signing that lease was not as easy as I thought. We sat down and read the lease picking outs the part that we deemed unnecessary. Much to our annoyance these parts seemed nonnegotiable. So lease unsigned up headed up to our apartment to take measurements and figure out exactly how much space we have.

Doubt entered my mind as we entered the apartment. My head kept trying to tell me that it wasn’t big enough, we needed more closet space, the kitchen sink was  too shallow, why don’t the window open? Thses thoughts kept swirling through my head, making me feel like this was a mistake – giving me cold apartment feet.

After 2 hours of measuring, deliberating and spacial configurating I sat down on the windowsill and glanced around the living room. As I sat staring into my empty living room everything seemed to click. This is right, the space is perfect, the apartment is amazing, I know that the next 15 months spent here is going to be an amazing time! As I sat there eye to eye with my apartment I realized that this is all the space we need. I have space now that I don’t even use, yet still have to clean – not an ideal partnership. Not to mention I want the decor for this apartment to be minimal chic. I am hoping to convince Mr. K to go along with this and retire from his furniture crafting. So hopefully in another month I will be welcoming people into my nicely streamlined apartment.

Apartment Hunt – Jersey City

March 7, 2010

Me: I kinda want to look at some New Jersey waterfront apartments today. Do you want to look at some, or are you set on the city?

Mr. K: I don’t really want to be in Jersey, I think we should try and apply for the apartment in the east 50s.

Me: I want to take a look at it again, then maybe apply, I will call the broker to see if he can show it to us.

Well, the broker said he didn’t know if he would be able to show it to us because the man with the keys was “sick”. So Pete and I decided to go look at some Jersey City waterfront apartments until we heard back from the broker. The first building we went to some friends of ours live in so we had already had the tour. We saw three different layouts, a small one bedroom with great views, and two larger one bedrooms with not so great views and one of them had a bad layout. We really loved the building all its amenities and the amazing views from the smaller bedroom. But we wanted to explore our options, so we kept our apartment hunt going.

The next building we went to was very similar to the first, had many of the same amenities. We saw two bedrooms in that building one with amazing closet space and one with a terrace, and views. Naturally we gravitated to the one with the terrace. After seeing one more just ok apartment the great debate began. We had to choose between two great almost identical buildings, each with great apartments. How do we decide? Do we go with the less expensive one? The one with stainless appliances? The bigger one? It was so hard to decide!

After some negotiating with apartment buildings, and after Mr. K and I did a lot of pros and cons discussing we had our decision. We were going with the bigger apartment with terrace! Yay!!!

I thought for sure I was going to end up back in the city, but none of the apartments I saw across the river felt right. The ones I saw in Jersey City did! After walking out of both of the Jersey City buildings I felt happy, I knew that this is where Mr. K and I were meant to be. Mr. K felt it too, he realized that he preferred the quiet calmness of the waterfront versus the crazy chaoticness of NYC. I never thought I would be so excited and happy about living in Jersey City!

April 1 cannot get here soon enough!

Super Bowl!

Feb. 7, 2010

Mr. K and I are slowly breaking in the new apartment. We had some Jersey neighbors over for the Super Bowl tonight. Our super bowl gathering ended up surprising me, it wasn’t your typical chili/hoagie party, we stepped it up a notch and brought some tasty crustaceans to the party. I always get a little nervous when I entertain people in a new environment for the first time. I was nervous before my gal pals came over, and again I was slightly nervous before Super bowl gathering. Once everyone got in and got a beer and got settled my nerves melted away. Plus Mr. K gallantly took charge of the food! He had everything cooking together harmoniously smelling delicious. It was great! All I had to do was sit on the couch eat some brie and take 5 minutes to make the broccoli (which I slightly overcooked, ooops). Not only did he make the dinner, but he gave a lesson on how to break into the little critters, warning everyone to stay away from the “mustard” and saving the shells to make a bisque. Then to top it all off he did most of this dishes. I could get used to this!

CSA

Jan. 30, 2010

Lately I have been learning a lot about how my food choices are effecting the environment, where my food is coming from, and how it is being treated before it gets to my table. I am not really liking what I am finding out about the food I have been eating for the past 27 years of my life. I just finished reading Mark Bittman’s Food Matters book. He makes an interesting claim, encouraging individuals to participate in sane eating which basically means cutting out all junk and heavily processed food out of your diet, while cutting back on the amount of animal proteins consumed. According to him, your diet mostly consists of real whole grains, fruits, veggies, and legumes. But you can still have that ice cream, and crusty white bread, just as long as you aren’t consuming them for breakfast lunch and dinner.

After watching Food Inc. I pretty much wanted to give up meat all together, but instead Mr. K and I are going to join a farm with a community supported agriculture (CSA) program. I found this amazing website locagharvest.org where all you need to do is enter your zip code and it gives you a list of CSAs in your area. Hopefully we will be able to get into one of them that offers meat too! Mr. K’s mom brought a whole freezer of grass fed beef back from Texas, so eating animals in a humane way is possible, you just gotta get a little creative.

CSAs provide you with the freshest possible produce, reduce carbon footprint, and support the local agriculture what could be better than that!

Apartment Guests

Jan. 23, 2010

Tonight my city gal pals are coming over to Jersey. After some fajitas, and a lot of wine we got a little restless and started playing drinking games. Since I do not own any traditional board games, we decided to create our own. I will not mention the name of these games, but I will say they were hilarious and highly entertaining! I’m happy that my friends crossed the state lines for some good times and great memories.

While we were gulping down vino, JS’s sister went into labor. She wanted to do it naturally no drugs, no c-section no nothing. That is one brave momma. Nowadays it seems as though a lot of births a mechanized. Most moms to be, myself included don’t want to remember the pain and agony of birthing a child. Which got me wondering if you don’t remember the pain and agony do you actually remember giving birth to your baby? If you didn’t get to hold it in your arms immediately, would you even know if it came out? Anyways just a thought. As of this very moment, I would rather hold a glass of wine over a baby any day!

Egg Sale

Jan. 21, 2010

A sign in the path train caught my eye last night as I headed back to Jersey. It said something like  “Donate your Eggs Receive $8K” It was a little more tastefully written, but it did get me thinking. Most of us have felt the money crunch once or twice in our day, but I never thought of selling blood or eggs or any other part of my body as an easy money-making idea, until now. For some reason this sign lit a little fire in my brain saying “why not it’s so easy!” They have many easily located egg donating facilities in New Jersey and I live in New Jersey it’s a perfect fit! Then I read on and it mentioned multiple procedures, tests, and visits to their clinic, which got me thinking:

  • what if they take all my good eggs? I only have so many you know.
  • what if they take all the eggs that are ready to be released over the next five years leaving me with none to make a baby with in the near future??
  • what exactly does multiple procedures mean??
  • what if their facilities really aren’t easily located and I drive around lost eventually getting accosted in the Jersey ghetto?

All these thoughts let to the same answer: This is NOT a good idea, for me at least.

I Could Get Used to This…

Jan. 17, 2010

Today was a little sunday funday with our friends who live in the nice part of JC. Yes, I learned today that there is a nice part of Jersey City. It’s exciting to know fun people to live on our side of the tracks, giving us the best of both worlds. We arrived at their high rise apartment building and were told that we should make our way up to the theater room. Theater room I’m thinking what is that??

We head up to the 11th floor and enter a lounge type area complete with bar, pool table, lounge couches and multiple flat screens. Not to mention that just outside was a olympic size swimming pool, cabanas straight out of Vegas, hot tub and fire pit.

We find the theater room and have a nice afternoon of chatting and drinking with Mr. and Mrs. M. We get a tour of their apartment a nice two bed to bath with dishwasher, views, and the ultimate prize an in apartment washer/dryer!

Next stop was the fitness center again beautiful and it even has yoga classes! We end the afternoon with a little football and more fun and then head out making plans to come back to play a little virtual golf. Yes, this apartment building has a room dedicated to playing virtual golf. This apartment building seems to have it all great friends, amenities, did I mention it was a short walk away from the exchange place path? Which makes it a whole lot easier to meet my city folk out on a Saturday night! Hurrah!
