Paris Day 2

May 30, 2010

Paris, day 2 – French Open and the scavenger hunt. Looking back this entire day seemed to be somewhat of a scavenger hunt.  Mr.K and I hunted for the Metro after another amazing breakfast that consisted of cheesy goodness and a perfect bright orange egg on top! Then we hunted for J and E at the French Open – although we did get a little distracted the Polish doubles and front row seating.

Then we hunted for a café to sit and have a drink at, and then we got real – we decided to do what every tourist in Paris should do: Eat and Drink their way through a Parisian neighborhood. We started out by hitting up the patisserie near our hotel for French pastry, a baguette, and a crepe avec nutella et framboise. Then we found the nearest café and during the standard 20 minutes wait for our champagne to be delivered to our table, created a scavenger hunt list. Here is most of what we came up with:

Guinness – Mr. K

French beer – Mrs. K (kronberg)

Champagne – both

Red and white wine – both

Savory – both (crepes w/glass white wine) – Mine was sooooooo good – I LOVE French eggs

  1. Sweet – both (pain au chocolate and Meringue)

Cheese and bread – (brie, sheep’s and baguette with red wine)

Wild card – both

Touch water – both (fountain at Jardin du Luxembourg and La Seine)

Smoke something – both (not accomplished)

Drink a beer in the street – Mrs. K (Duvel purchased from a bar and toted along on my bike)

I believe the only thing that we did not accomplish was to smoke something. After our champagne we went off in search of a good ol American dive bar, Mr.K knew just the place. We tapped their Guinness keg watched some hockey and tried to avoid eye contact with the creepy homeless guy wandering aimlessly around the bar asking for ciggys. Next was food time we found another very American crepe place I ordered the best crepe ever (well maybe this one is second to the duck crepe in Montreal) stuffed with cheese spinach and a perfectly fried egg. Mr. K’s crepe not very good, but its ok he helped me eat mine.

We wandered and found a cute pastry shop with huge white fluffy meringues (oh lala!) for me and a pain au chocolate (his pastry of choice)for Mr.K. With the sweet safely in my bad we asked for the nearest wine store, of course! We ask the wine shop owner if she would help us pick out a nice bottle of red for bread and cheese eating. We get our bottle and two glasses and head back to the hotel.

With Bread, wine, cheese, and pastries in tow we picnic among the manicured trees and blooming flowers in the Jardin du Luxembourg.  We then decided to take on some wild cards:

  1. Activity involving statues
  2. Make out in the rain
  3. Run back to our hotel before J and E get there.

At some point during the best day ever in Paris, day turned into night and we end up in a bar with live jazz music with J and E. Awkwardness. But Awkwardness can be remedied with drinking, and often time’s hilarity ensues from the drinking. This is how we find ourselves biking to Notre Dame at 1 am me with a beer in my bike basket – followed by some groovy gymnastic moves outside of the church. The rest of the night pretty much goes as follows:

  1. J drinks from La Seine
  2. Random French bar with Sean White doppelganger
  3. Trying to get McDos to open up for us sometime between the hours of 4 and 6 am
  4. Mr. K and I getting back to our hotel realizing that it is sometime between 4 and 6 am and we have a noon flight back home.
  5. Us both praying that our wakeup call actually wakes us up
  6. Sleep
  7. Ring, wake up call success!

Summertime in Korea

May 12, 2010

Tonight Mr. K and I did a korean themed cooking class with JR and IS at the culinary center at Whole Food on Bowery. The menu had me a bit worried a lot of pig and cow, beef being something that I do not eat unless I’m feeling adventurous! On the menu were pork dumplings, cold buckwheat noodle soup, korean BBQed short ribs and Korean sundaes. Everything was soooooo yummy! I even sampled some of the short ribs. Our table scarfed down everything! JR and IS made great cooking partners, entertaining us with stories from their Morocco trip and IS’s new “sesame cucumber fragrance”. It was a lot of fun!

At some point in the conversation turned to, well I’m not quite sure what it turned to, but IS mentioned how he would love to go to Montana and Wyoming. Well he sure did pick the right state, as we all know Mr.K would probably marry WY if he could, then they could be together forever. Then a few weeks back JS was talking about a former flame and how he is really into mountain sports and would love the west, Wyoming would be right up his ally.  I find this interesting because before I met Mr.K I never thought about WY, let alone thought I would ever want to take a trip there. Now living/vacation in Wyoming seems to be one everyone’s brain. This makes me wonder if dude ranches and vast wilderness will soon replace Monaco and Seychelles for the “it” vacation spots, or at least become the new “it” vacation spots within the continental US. Are people trading lazy days on the beach for sporty mountain climbing vacations?? Mr.K and I have definetly taken our share of wilderness vacations treking from one town to another in AK, and then there is the upcoming mountain trek in Tanzania. Personally I like a nice mix of both!

Honeymoon Is On!

It’s official! We are honeymooning in Africa for three whole weeks! The deposit has been sent in and the itinerary finalized!

We have been finalizing plans and making adjustments for this trip for weeks, at times it never seemed like we would finish. The whole thing was a bit overwhelming. Waiting to hear back from Kenya to see of the lodging we wanted was available, trying to figure out which game reserves we wanted to go to, and waiting for Mr. K to hear back about his vacation time. In the end everything worked out! Now we just need to get our shots, pack our bags, and wait for the days to tick by!

Our itinerary is awesome! I started bouncing around in my chair the first time I looked it over. We are so very lucky! So here’s our trip hopefully we made the right choices:

day 1-2 Nairobi

day 3-5 Samburu

day 6-8 Laikipia

day 9-12 Masai Mara

day 13-15 Trek up Mt. Meru

day 16 Arusha

day 17-22 Zanzibar

Kentucky Derby Party

May 1, 2010

Our 3rd annual Kentucky Derby party was infield themed. What would be super appropriate for an infield themed derby party?? A KEG! Yes, folks that is right Mr. K and I have finally accomplished our dream of having a keg on our patio! But the keg we got wasn’t really a dream come true:( It was a foam monster. As I prepped veggies in the kitchen I watched as Mr. K brought in pitcher after of pitcher of foam, not a drop of liquid. This is how our keg performed for the majority of our party, it got a little better as the sun began to set, but not much. Our keg dreams turned out to be a bust.

Luckily we had plenty of back up booze: mint juleps, Arnold palmers, bourbon and more bourbon. We got a pretty good turn out now that we are in Jersey City and all – it’s a decent commute especially for those who live out in Queens.

I was happy with the derby party lots of bets were made, lots of people were able to sit on our couch (that no one spilled on!) and it was the most beautiful day we have had so far, not a drop of wind on the patio. No one drunkenly fell off the patio, but we did have one fall head first on to the patio, but she survived with minor cuts and bruises. So now we just sit back and relax till next year.

Wedding Album Proofs!

March 24, 2010

Recently we got to see the proof of our wedding album! It took us forever to choose the 60 or 70 photos that are going into our album. There was much debate, and we spent about 2 hours in the photography studio mulling over our decisions. Then one day I received an e-mail saying that the proof of our wedding album was finished! Joy!

I was nervous about seeing the proof. I like to have control over certain situations – I didn’t know if I could trust our photographers to create a stunning photo book. How were they supposed to know which photos were our favorites and are one we want showcased? How are they supposed to tell our story when the album designer wasn’t even at our wedding?

I have to admit they did a great job on the book! Granted there were about 4 pages of notes on things that we wanted changed/photoshopped but all in all the book looks good and we look good! Plus it was really fun reliving our wedding day!

Eating the Freezer

March 19, 2010

Mr. K and I have locked down our move out day! For a while I was worried that we would not be able to find available movers, but we got lucky and our super cheap mover became available.

A few weeks back I was really into making soups and chili – I made double batches of everything I cooked up and froze half. All of these homemade concoctions are sitting in our freezer begging to be eaten before we move. Mr. K and I set a goal to eat as much of our existing food as we possible can before we move. There will be no moving boxes full of half-eaten food like s the last time. So we have about two weeks eat our way through our food supply. I’m expecting things to get pretty interesting as the days go by. Hopefully I will be able to create some innovative delicious recipes, instead of kitchen disasters. Only time will tell, as for right now we have had a bag of cooked white beans sitting lonely in our fridge for the past two days. I’mcounting on this weekend to provide me with some rustic recipes for my average beans.

So in an attempt to reach our goal we brought a few snacks for the car ride:

1/3 brick of cream cheese

1/3 bag of wheat thins

huge bag of sun chips

1/4 bag kettle chips

6 beers

2 diet cokes

large bag of twizzlers

couple handfuls of trail mix

If all goes well we will not be returning with any of it

Moving on Up!

March 14, 2010

That’s right! Mr. K and I are moving on up – literally! We are leaving our third floor walk up in ghetto suburbia for a penthouse apartment in the sky! Our new neighbors will be lady Liberty and the Exchange Place path station! Goodbye horrendous cab lines, hello 5 minute walk home!

Today we signed our lease and made it official, for the next 15 months we will be living on the NJ waterfront. However signing that lease was not as easy as I thought. We sat down and read the lease picking outs the part that we deemed unnecessary. Much to our annoyance these parts seemed nonnegotiable. So lease unsigned up headed up to our apartment to take measurements and figure out exactly how much space we have.

Doubt entered my mind as we entered the apartment. My head kept trying to tell me that it wasn’t big enough, we needed more closet space, the kitchen sink was  too shallow, why don’t the window open? Thses thoughts kept swirling through my head, making me feel like this was a mistake – giving me cold apartment feet.

After 2 hours of measuring, deliberating and spacial configurating I sat down on the windowsill and glanced around the living room. As I sat staring into my empty living room everything seemed to click. This is right, the space is perfect, the apartment is amazing, I know that the next 15 months spent here is going to be an amazing time! As I sat there eye to eye with my apartment I realized that this is all the space we need. I have space now that I don’t even use, yet still have to clean – not an ideal partnership. Not to mention I want the decor for this apartment to be minimal chic. I am hoping to convince Mr. K to go along with this and retire from his furniture crafting. So hopefully in another month I will be welcoming people into my nicely streamlined apartment.

March 13, 2010

Today my hope of becoming a Wii Olympian was crushed, Djoubtwii did not perform like we had hoped. We even started a fight with Wiireland, the gold medal winner, bringing shame to our country.

Mr. K and I spent the entire day driving around NYC in a torrential downpour – it was bad, and I officially regret throwing away my rain boots. I really cannot comprehend how my umbrella survived the hurricane like winds that were swirling around 84th street.

This ugly day was highlighted by my new smart phone purchase! I have officially stepped into the 21st century with my new Droid, outfitted it its girlie purple case! Normally I am not all about outfitting my phone with frilly cases and protective gear, but TC persuaded me into gearing up my phone. To me the Droid is a very manly phone, it is black metal and growls Droid. My purple cover takes away the mannishness and probably makes me love my phone even more. Mr. K has a Droid too and was a major advocate for me buying mine. I am a little afraid that instead of conversing with each other we will end up spending every meal playing on our phones. This thought scares me a little bit especially after I noticed that the couple sitting next to us didn’t say one word to each other during their meal. But I figure that since Mr. K and I have already been through so much craziness during the past 6 month – a little Droid won’t be able to take us down!

Let the Hunt Begin!

Over the past week Mr. K and I have made a few decisions:

  1. We are going to stay in this area for another year (give or take)
  2. We are going to move out of our apartment April 1
  3. We are going to look for places in the city

I have not felt this happy in a while! The thought of moving back to the city brought a huge giddy grin to my face!

Living here has made me realize that it does matter where I live, location does matter. I also realized that just because my apartment has space doesn’t mean that I will use it. The only time I have used the second bedroom is to work out on my elliptical. I have a huge desk in my huge bedroom and I think I have used that once. Not to mention that none of my family or friends seem too interested in staying in the second bedroom when they visit, nor did my family seem interested in visiting. So as I see it paying an extra couple hundred dollars for a second bedroom and a little more space might not be worth it.

Tonight we headed up to the UWS to take a look at a convertible one bedroom with a large garden. I was warned over the phone that this was a 35 foot studio not a true one bedroom. So not expecting much Mr. K and I went to view the apartment.

What we saw was a very tiny studio, smaller than our Penny Lane place with a decent garden, also smaller than our Penny Lane place. I have no idea how they would build a wall to create a bedroom – there was definitely not enough room. However it did have a washer/dryer in the kitchen, but no dishwasher. It’s weird what some people will do to a NYC apartment. Needless to say we passed on this apartment.

One down let’s see what Saturday holds.

Iggys, San Loco, and Rock Band

Feb. 19, 2010

This morning Mr. K and I started out on the wrong foot. We got into some text/telephone conversations all before 7:30 am that left me feeling confused and stressed out. So, for most of the morning I sat at work with a tight little ball of tensions and stress sitting in my chest. Not exactly how I wanted to start out my weekend! Looking back it’s pretty funny that I let a few text messages and one short telephone conversation change my whole outlook on not just my day, but my weekend as well. I have been learning not to carry around my past into my future, but easier said than done.

Flash forward a few hours and one phone conversation with Mr. K later, and I am on my way to meet him at Iggys in the LES, where we had post dinner drinks on our first date. Now this is one area of my past that I don’t mind dragging into my future. It was great sitting reminiscing about our first date. We each remembered exactly where we sat (big round table near the door), Mr. K knew exactly what he played on the jukebox (a lot of Verve, that is no longer on the jukebox), and me not believing that his middle name is Ezekiel, and forcing him to show me some proof. It was crazy how all the memories came flooding back as if our first date was months ago instead of years!

The main reason we were out that night was to see HB’s boy toys band play at the Delancy. So after we stopped at San Loco for a quick dinner (seriously the best tacos ever!), we headed over to the Delancy just in time to catch the band’s first song. I didn’t really know what to expect, but his band was a really impressive rocker band, leather pants and all! So in true rocker style we kept the party going after the set was finished on the rooftop bar of the Delancy.
